July 25: getting ready to Rumble

We left the hotel and Bill dropped me and all the gear at Veteran's Freedom Park in LaCrosse, WI. I set up camp and he drove to Dubuque to park the truck, then rode the chartered bus back. We were the only lonely campsite for a while, until the bus arrived and over a hundred others set up camp in the same park. There are 164 people registered this year--another record for the Rumble. I noticed while setting up camp that we were directly beneath the flight path for a major airport... Oh well, may as well get used to the noise since we usually camp next to active train tracks every night!
After everyone was set up we signed the release forms, picked up our goodies--this year a sit-upon and an umbrella--and had the pre trip meeting. This is Rex in the photo--he is the grand poobah of the Great River Rumble!
There were several restaurants in LaCrosse and we were on our own for supper. Bill and I walked to Huck Finn's and were well pleased with the food and the service. We heard later that others had to wait a long time for their food, but we did not. The place was hopping--music and dancing until who knows when. We left early to get some sleep in preparation for the 5:00 AM wakeup call.
