August 31, 2017. Sailing at Thousand Islands, Ontario.

We planned on leaving at 8 AM, but didn't get on the road until 8:30. We did not think that would be a problem.  The border agent kept us about 20 minutes, asking us questions we'd never been asked before, but we must have given the appropriate responses, because after he shut the window and called his supervisor he let us come into Canada.

I had requested Canadian phone coverage before we left, but as soon as we crossed the border our service disappeared, and no amount of tweaking our settings made it come back.

We encountered several areas of construction on the 401, and a lot of traffic around Toronto. Toronto is like Chicago in that you can never get by it without being caught in stop and go traffic, no matter how far out from town you are.  We stopped at the first service centre past Toronto and I tried to call the marina at Kingston to tell them we'd be late arriving. After losing $10.40 (Canadian) in the pay phone a woman took pity on me and allowed me to use her cell phone. Good thing--they were all leaving the marina at 5 PM and it was already 4:45! I found out what dock we were supposed to have, and we drove the last couple of hours into Kingston.

Shadows were long when we arrived at 7 PM but there was enough daylight to get the mast up and the boat prepared for launching before it got fully dark. It was totally dark when we put her in the water, and past the time that the launch ramp was supposed to be closed. We found our dock space and tied up, attached the boom and put the other sails on deck so we would have room to sleep. Then we made some sandwiches and called it dinner, now 9 PM. A security guard told me the code to get into the washrooms. All is well on Troika!
