September10-11, 2018. Windsor, Ontario to Vienna Austria.

This was the longest day ever! we started out Monday morning when Bill dropped me off at Diana's house. Diana drove us to Windsor airport--Air Canada flights were hundreds of dollars less expensive than any US-based airline!

It was raining when we crossed the border into Canada, still raining when we walked outside to get on our plane, and still raining when we arrived at Toronto and had to walk outside again to get off the plane. I see a pattern here...

It was an uneventful flight from Toronto to Vienna--8 hours long. I didn't sleep, as usual. We landed at Vienna airport at 8 AM today.  We figured out the train system and took a train from the airport to a hub station and then from the hub to the station nearest our hotel.

We left our luggage at the hotel and went out to explore Vienna. She is a beautiful old city.

We walked everywhere! We'd planned to take a tram tour of the Ring (what was the walled city in the old days) but never got around to it. Many of the streets here are narrow. Bikes are everywhere, sometimes they are faster than the 4-wheeled traffic! There are bike lanes throughout the city, protected from other traffic by a curb.

We walked past the palace of the Hapsburgs but did not go in.

We stopped at the Spanish Riding School and watched the Lipizzaner Stallions practice their routines. I had my camera out but they made me put it away... here's one in his stall.

We had a light lunch at the Lipizzaner Cafe. Cold salmon on toast, coffee, and sachertorte. Then we walked to see the St. Charles de Borromeo Church. Known here as Karlskirche. We paid 6 euros to get in.

The paintings throughout the church were beautiful--there was a heavy emphasis on angels!

There was scaffolding in place, and we were allowed to go up on it (there was a glass walled elevator within the scaffolding). It was incredible seeing the dome up  close!

After that we went to the hotel--it was finally after 3 PM and we could check in! We'd dropped our luggage there early this morning. We showered and rested up, and then went out again. We walked over to the  Albertina Art Museum and looked at paintings by famous artists for hours (until they were ready to close). Below is Pablo Picasso's "Woman in a Green Hat". It was an interesting museum. The second floor was divided into rooms with each important art movement in its own room with explanations of the movement and the artists' bodies of work.

There were many works by Monet, Picasso and Seurat, with explanations of the movements they led.

We then walked to another district looking for dinner. We walked a very long way and saw a lot of things, but we never found the restaurant we were looking for, so we agreed to eat at a Hungarian Restaurant, and it was very good. We finally walked back to the hotel--by then I'd been up 40 hours, flew across 6 time zones and walked 10 miles!
