October 5, 2018. At Mystic, CT.

Right after breakfast we split up to to do whatever we wanted. Bill and I, Fred and Doris, and Diana, Tom and Dennis went to Mystic Seaport. Kathie and Dianne went for a bike ride.

We toured several ships there, most of them designated as National Historic Sites. We entered the lighthouse and watched a short video about the history of lighthouses in the US.

My favorite ship was the Morgan--it was a whaler that completed 37 whaling voyages in its career. I just can't imagine the hardships on a ship like this! The boats that the crew used to harpoon and tow in the whales seem so inadequate!

After touring the ship I went into a museum of whaling and watched a video about whaling and the hardships and travail on the ships. Look how the ship looms over the buildings!

There is a reconstructed shipyard here--this was interesting to me because my paternal grandfather worked at a shipyard in the early 1900s. At the Mystic shipyard they are refurbishing the Mayflower replica that was built 50 years ago.

When we got back to the hotel Tom, Dennis and Diana went for a ride on the hotel bikes. They did the "walking tour" by bicycle. I walked to a scrapbook store and then met Kathie and Dianne at the local bike shop on the way back.

Dianne and I played some Scrabble after we got back to the inn. Then we all loaded up in the cars and went to the beer and wine store! The place Diana found for us to have dinner was a BYOB place--Ford's Lobsters. Here we are with our brown bags just before we ordered dinner.

We had a great time! The food was exceptional (except for Bill, who does not eat seafood). On the way out we tapped a stranger to take our photo so we could all be in it. Here we are: me, Bill, Diana, Tom, Kathie, Dennis, Dianne, Doris and Fred. If we look happy it's because we are! We killed a couple of bottles of wine and several beers. told a lot of great stories, and ate way too much!
