Several years ago I met some people from the Polish American Foundation of Connecticut. They presented a program at the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan seminar and afterward mentioned that they had some spots open in their annual trip to Poland. Their destination was not where I wanted to go, so I asked them to notify me when they were going to the Poznan district, the home of my father's ancestors.
I got an email in January; they were going to Poznan, and I signed up!
I took a Polish language beginner course over the summer, and booked my flights to coincide with theirs, meeting most of them at JFK airport. We took an overnight flight to Warsaw on Polish Airlines, arriving in early afternoon due to the 6 hour time change.
The downtown area of Warsaw consists mostly of new buildings and skyscrapers, because it was bombed into oblivion during World War 2. This photo was taken out of my hotel window.
