It was supposed to be 69 miles but we went off route today.
The day started out cloudy, with a 50% chance of rain. Wherever it went, it missed us! We had another gorgeous summer day for cycling in upstate New York. We spent all of the morning on rte. 5 E again, with its wide shoulder for cyclists. There were a couple of construction areas, but we were able to get by them with little trouble. As we climbed out of Little Falls we could see the Mohawk River valley below us. Other sights were the Erie Canal and some old forts and homes (from the mid 1700s, when the British moved west). The railroad was right beside the road (as it was beside the hotel last night).
The official sag was at a scenic overlook of the Mohawk valley, 33 miles into the ride. I rode with George today; you can see us in the photo taken at the sag.
After the official sag, we made short work of the 18 miles to the Catholic Charities sag. They were set up in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot. This was also the jumping off point for Don's tour. We left all together and got about 100 feet before Don got a flat tire! The second photo begs the question: How many men does it take to change a flat tire???? After the tire was changes, Don led us onto a lovely bike path along the river, on the streets through the historic district of Schenectady, back on a bike path, and then we rejoined the CrossRoads route. About 20 of us followed him on this route of around 20 miles and it was great fun. We had a couple of steep hills, but it was fun anyway!
When we rejoined the route, we came out on a terrible road--5 lanes, very busy, inconsiderate drivers, no bike lane. What a disappointment to spend the last 3 miles of such a lovely day on that road!
Tomorrow we go to Vermont! Don told us last night that we had 250.1 miles to go to Boston!

My computer has be down since Thur. I have a neighbor running of your blog daily for us. Enjoying it every day. I bought a new computer, had it installed at 8:00 this morning, so now I am back in business.
