NIght before the race

Since I was able to run 4 miles, I decided I could do a Sprint distance triathlon. So I signed up for the Race for Recovery, just 20 miles from home. It would be such a shame to NOT do this race and then drive many hours to do others later in the season...

The race is tomorrow AM. I have my race bag packed; Bill has the trailer loaded with kayaks, my bike, and various other equipment. He and Erika and Toby are going to do water support during the race. My race is a 1000 meter swim, 14 mile bike, and 4 mile run, a bit longer than the usual Sprint distance race. There is also a Half Iron distance race, so the water supporters will be out there a while. My original plan was to do this Half Iron race, but due to injuries and work, I was not able to train sufficiently for a 70.3 mile race this early in the season. My friend Carol is racing too, and her friend Jack is doing water support. Even though all the swimmers look alike to the people in the kayaks (black wetsuits, color coded swimcaps), it helps to see people you know out there looking out for you! Water temperature in Lake Erie today? 68. We will definitely be wearing wetsuits!
On one of my solo training rides this week I had a flat tire on one of the new tires I just put on my road bike! Now I don't trust the tires; since it split right at a seam in the tire I am not sure if I hit something or if it was a bad tire. So I took off the 2 new tires and put on the skinny racing tires I had from 2 year ago. I have ridden on them twice and they seem OK. Always something...

This past Thursday Toby and Kat and I did a 30 mile training ride and a good time was had by all. There was no whining! Yay! I think we are going to have a great time on the PALM ride later this month, that is Pedal Across Lower Michigan. The longest day of that week-long ride is 60 miles, so I would like us to get at least one 50 mile training ride in--that's a long ride for a 9-year old!

Wednesday I had Adam all day, and Toby for the afternoon--gotta catch up on the grandma duties now that I am done working... when Adam was too quiet and I went looking for him, guess what I found! (see photo). Truly a child of the 21st century! No, this was not a set up photo!
