April 17, 2011. Wiggins, MS to Dauphin Island, AL. 41 miles.

We planned a late start this morning because the alligator farm did not open until 9 AM and it was supposed to be only 9 miles away. Before we got started, Carol gave Tex a lesson in changing a tire. Can you imagine that she has never changed a tire on the road?????The alligator farm was supposed to be 9 miles away, but at 9 miles into the route we found the state line, and all of a sudden we were in Alabama. We missed the alligator farm altogether. Photo below shows Dianne, me and Kathie at the state line.

Of course there were fireworks stores at the state line... aren't there always?
We had a headwind for the first 20 miles of today's ride. Once we crossed the state line the wind and the traffic both increased, and the people became very rude. Alabamans apparently do not like to share the road with cyclists! People honked the horn long and hard as they were passing us, and some of them yelled nasty things at us and used finger signs.

We crossed a few bridges along the way, and there were signs indicating that you needed a salt water fishing license to fish there. There was a drawbridge in Bayou La Batre. Then we saw it ahead of us--the bridge to Dauphin Island! It looked quite impressive even from a couple of miles away. The bridge and its approaches added up to 3.5 miles on the route. There was a nice wide shoulder on both the approach and the bridge, but there was a lot of trash and glass on the shoulder.

After the bridge we stopped at Barnacle Bill's and had luscious grouper sandwiches and sweet potato fries. It was a great lunch! Dianne, Kathie, and I sat with Ruth; there was another table of our riders there at the same time. On Dauphin Island we saw these cute little condos. Condominimums indeed!

We are staying in condos for the next two nights (not condominimums), since tomorrow is a rest day. Dianne and I are sharing with Lise (pictured below with Dianne) and Nancy. I have my own bedroom and bathroom, as does Dianne. Lise and Nancy are sharing their room (twin beds and a private bathroom). There is a full kitchen. living and dining area; and two swimming pools and the beach all right here!
Since we crossed a state line today we had a margarita party, and we also celebrated Carol's birthday. We all signed a card and Carol's brother sent a cake, which was absolutely delicious.
We are all looking forward to the rest day tomorrow--what a great place to spend the day!

I think Bayou La Batre was where "Bubba" was from in Forrest Gump. : ) Snowing here today...very envious of your weather. As well as your trip. : )

Sounds like you experienced the sublime and the ridiculous today - some folks just don't know how to behave in polite company, I'm sorry you had to deal with them. Fortunately, not everyone in AL is like that.
