June 20, 2011. Hesperia to Big Rapids. 46 miles.

This was a day of rolling hills. We had a lot of fun seeing how far we could get on the coastdown--sometimes we were able to make it all the way up the next hill--how cool is that! Toby and I saw this dairy and I neglected to take a photo of its name--the Udder Side Dairy! Below is a photo of the road marks we are following across the state. The route is very well marked, with signs painted on the road every 5 miles and before and after every turn.

It rained the last 9 miles of this ride. We were soaked to the skin when we got to the school. I was rather mud covered as well, since I was riding behind Toby and he had to hit every puddle along the way. And there were a lot of puddles!

When we got to the school we found that they had unloaded the trucks into the school and an outdoor pavilion. It took us quite some time to find all of our bags. We had loaded them all together but they were NOT together in the school.... we wandered up and down several hallways before finding all 6 bags.

The showers were ice cold--in contrast to yesterday's boiling hot showers. Why don't they have any temperature control in these school showers????? As I was entering the shower room a woman custodian was chasing us out so a male plumber could come in and try to fix the temperature.... So I washed up in a restroom and went on my way, since we had plans for the evening.

Our local friend Roger came to pick us up with his friend Judy, and we all went out to dinner. It was a great time! I usually manage to see him once a year, but it's been at least 2 years this time. Way too long. It was great to catch up with a good friend.

When we got back to the school I took an ice cold shower (so much for the plumber fixing it) and caught a ride with some guys in a van to go to the laundromat. Our wet clothes and gloves were so smelly I could not stand to be in the tent with them! The guys in the van run a business called "Get a Ride", and they were a lot of fun, even singing a rap about getting a ride. When I got back to the school it was time for bed and Toby had gotten soaked again in a water fight. Sigh. At least the stinky gloves were clean and dry. The weather report is not good--looks like we'll be wet all week.
