Kayaking on the river: May 20, 2014.

My friend Collie suggested we have a "women only" kayak trip; it was not a pretty day but we had 4 takers:Julie, me, Collie and Eileen. We launched from our dock.

Our route was to go downstream from home to Lake Erie Metro Park. We successfully navigated the turbulence under the Grosse Ile Free Bridge, and continued down the river.

It was raining by the time we got to Gibraltar, and the waves picked up drastically when we got out into Lake Erie. I missed the turn for the Gibraltar canals, and continued on. thinking there was another entrance. Finally we turned around and headed back to the turn I had missed. It was rough going! The waves were 3-4 feet deep, the wind was against us, and it was spitting rain. However, once we got into the canal it was as smooth as glass. So we had a snack and continued on.

We had to cross open water against the wind and waves to get from the outlet of the canal to the boat docks at Lake Erie Metro Park. But we all made it there successfully--we were cold and damp, but no one dumped into the cold water.  I told Collie that after this day she could no longer call herself an "inexperienced kayaker"!

Bill was waiting at the dock. It turns out that he was getting reports from the incoming fishermen who saw us out there struggling, making wrong turns, and generally having a good time. I think next time we do this we'll pick a sunny warm day!
