The kids and I started riding with Dianne but lost her after the first rest stop--she stopped to buy some Gatorade, having forgotten to get one from the trailer. Delia and I stopped at Westphalia Milling Company for a photo opportunity. She likes taking pictures!
Alison had been riding the recumbent bike to reduce pressure on her foot, but it did not work out so well with Bill pulling Zane, so today they switched. Bill is riding his recumbent while Alison is pulling Zane on Bill's hybrid bike for the last segment of the ride.
Adam and Delia were both tired from the long hilly ride yesterday, so we bailed out at 35 miles. We rode in the truck to Owosso.
Owosso is home to the Steam Railroading Institute, which owns the locomotive used as the model for the Polar Express movie. We took a shuttle bus from the school to the town and walked over to the Railroading Museum to see the train.
The locomotive was in a service shed, so we rode a miniature train to get there.
It was huge! A man was there explaining how the locomotive works. He was surprised when I understood steam production, stokers, and superheaters, until I told him I had a 2nd Class Steam Engineering License.
Adam and Delia climbed up on the hand car and Alison explained to them how it works. There was a wooden train playscape, which was Zane's favorite part of the whole place.
After we rode the miniature train back to the museum we went aboard a caboose and walked through the passenger portion of the train. I picked up a schedule of activities from the museum. It would be fun to come back and ride the train with locomotive #1225 pulling it!
We caught the last shuttle back to Owosso High School and by then it was time for bed.
