September 13, 2018. Vienna to Salzburg, Austria.

After rising so early yesterday to meet the bike tour, we did not set alarms for this morning. I did not get up until 9:30! In my defense, that's 3:30 AM Michigan time. At least we made it to the breakfast room before they closed!

We went back to the room and packed up and left our luggage at the front desk while we walked to the Inner Ring of the city. No bikes or cars are allowed on that section of Kartnerstrasse. There was quite a mixture of old and new stores, both American and European.

We strolled past St. Stephen's Cathedral, almost too large to fit in a photograph!

Our goal was to get to Hohermarkt by noon to watch the Anchor Clock do its 12:00 song and dance. We made it in time, and watched with hundreds of other tourists while the native Viennese rolled their eyes and walked around us.

We walked on, looking for Judenplatz and the Holocaust memorial, but even with map in hand and phone navigator activated we still did not find it.  Finally we gave up and walked back to the neighborhood of our hotel. We finally saw the sun shining on the golden cabbage dome at the top of the Secession Art Museum. The dome represents Apollo's laurel leaves.

We went to the neighborhood open-air market and bought sandwiches to take with us.

We retrieved our luggage and walked to the train station. We had no difficulty navigating the system--we took the U4 to a central station where we changed to the U6 train. Then we crossed the street to the big train station and bought tickets to Salzburg. We got really cheap tickets, thanks to the advice of Kristina from yesterday's bike tour, so we upgraded to first class and had a very relaxing and comfortable trip.

We walked to our new hotel, had a glitch checking in, but it all worked out and the desk clerk gave us tickets for free drinks at the hotel bar. All's well that ends well!

Secession Art Museum with "golden cabbage" dome, actually represents Apollo's laurel leaves.
