We crossed the pedestrian bridge to old town. The bridge is festooned with locks attached to the bridge by people declaring their love for each other.
We walked past the Salzburg Cathedral, finished in 1628 during the Thirty Years War. This is near the festival district and they were busy setting up for a festival.
We took the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress, known as "the castle". It was built in 1077, and added on to over the next 600 years It is very well preserved. There is an extensive museum including a torture chamber!
The view of Salzburg from the castle was great--would have been better without the rain, but some things can't be controlled.
We descended in the funicular and walked back to the hotel.
Mozartplatz was on the way, and we stopped to see his statue.
After lunch we toured the Mirabell Palace Gardens, open to the public since 1850. The gate we entered through was guarded by a pair of stone unicorns.
We got off the bus at the Hellbrunn Palace to see the trick fountains. Built in 1613, the palace was never used as a residence. The gardens are famous for the trick fountains, and we were amused and showered by them throughout our guided tour.
The gazebo from the Sound of Music movie is there, and has been restored and donated to the city.
