October 8, 2018. Cycled around Manhattan Island. 44 Miles.

It was foggy this morning, with a slight mist. But we got on the bikes anyway and took a circuitous route to get to the George Washington Bridge. Bill and Fred had driven the route yesterday, and it was a safe way to get there.

When we got to the New York side of the bridge it was not evident where the Hudson River Greenway was. Finally I found the route on my phone and we got onto the path and off the busy streets. There were a lot of parks along the Hudson River, and we had to go around them to stay on the bikes. We rode past the piers along the Hudson River, passing a cruise ship and the Intrepid Museum at Pier 86 in Hell's Kitchen.

There was a lot of construction on the path, putting us out on the streets. The drivers were surprisingly considerate of us.

We could see the new World Trade Center buildings rising into the fog, so we went to see the memorial at Ground Zero. It was very emotional for all of us.

We saw the Statue of Liberty across the River in the fog.

We passed the ferry docks and headed north along the East River Greenway. We took the time to go across the Brooklyn Bridge and back. There were thousands of people on the pedestrian path on the bridge!

A friendly young woman took our photo.

There was even more construction on the East River Greenway. We spent a lot of time on the streets!

This little NYPD car was in a park at one of our detours.

We stopped for lunch at a little deli. Fred, Tom and I stayed outside with the bikes while Diana, Dianne and Dennis ate their sandwiches at the only 3 stools in the deli, right in the front window.

We finally got back to Fort Lee at 4:30 PM, loaded the bikes in the trailer and headed south. We stopped at Bayonne, NJ to see the memorial donated by Russia. It was quite a trip getting there! We had to drive to the Port Authority, past the cruise ship docks and commercial docks.

The memorial is a tear drop suspended between a stone representation of the World Trade Center buildings. There is a black marble pedestal all the way around the memorial listing the names of those killed in the attacks, and a special section with the names of those from Bayonne who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
