October 29, 2016. Charleston, SC to Grosse Ile, MI.

We dropped Kathie at the Charleston Airport around 8 AM in a very heavy fog. Then we started the long drive home, driving out of the fog within an hour. We saw some damage from hurricane Matthew at the first rest stop, still in South Carolina.

We stopped for lunch in North Carolina. I found a place called Harvest Grill when doing a restaurant search on my phone, not realizing it was an upscale restaurant at a local winery.

The service and the food were both exceptional--what a treat to find such a place only 10 minutes from I-77! It was so good that I brought home a case of white wine! (no we did not drink alcohol at lunch, just a taste to see if we wanted to purchase any). Tom bought a bottle of red.

Even though we were on the interstate we still had to pass through the mountains. You know you're in serious terrain when you see runaway truck ramps on the freeway!

We passed through variations of fall color on the way home. South Carolina was still green, North Carolina was mixed. We were in Virginia when I took the photo below at yet another rest area.

We passed through a couple of tunnels in West Virginia, still seeing some fall colors there.

Finally we were in Ohio with hours of driving still ahead of us. We stopped at Arby's for dinner--we had to eat but did not want to take any more time on the road. We arrived home in Michigan after midnight. All the way home we marveled at the wonderful trip we'd had, and started planning our next adventure!
