We took a drive out to the beginning of the Marjorie Harris Carr Florida Greenway. There is a paved trail there and we walked it. She was an environmental activist who fought hard against the Cross Florida Barge Canal that was proposed centuries ago, started in the 1930s,scrapped in the 40s and resumed in the 1960s. It was completed from the gulf to10 miles inland before the environmentalists prevailed and it was stopped in the 1970s.
Another day we biked and drove out to the dam where they stopped digging the canal. There is a bike trail there. Fred, Tom and I biked out from Crystal River, while Doris and Bill drove to the dam. We all biked up the trail to the overlook where the Canal and the Withlacoochee River run into Lake Rousseau. We had a picnic lunch overlooking the lake.
